 Mouth piece, Reed and Ligature

Good Morning Friends. Slowly but surely I have been making progress with the clarinet. I can play almost all the lower notes without any problems and the sound is very close to pleasant. Now I'm fighting the higher register notes. I can play the practice lessons without too much problems although I'm still pausing while rolling my thumb over the register key. At the same time I'm learning to play "Embraceable You". Here I do run into a lots of problems with the higher notes. The reed refuses to make the right sound or no sound at all. The more I practice the worse it gets. This is the equipment that I'm using: Buffet R-13, Vandoren 5JB (Profile 88) mouthpiece and a Mitchell Lurie #2 reed. The ligature is a Rovner, Dark 1R. Of all the reeds that I have tried the Luries are the ones that work best for me. The 5JB mouthpice recomends a #1.5 or #2 reed. As I said the first two or three runs at the music the clarinet plays as good as I can make it play but then it refuses to give me those high notes. Open for suggestions and constructive criticism.

The 5JB requires a soft reed such as a Vandoren #1.5 or #2. But reed strengths are not standardised and ML reeds are softer for the same number than Vandoren.

I do wonder whether you are wise to learn on a 5JB. This is a specialist jazz mouthpiece that most of us would probably struggle to play on. You might be better advised to learn on a more mainstream choice, and keep the 5JB for when you can play better.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Sea Galan,

If you don't have one, IMO you need a teacher to help you so that you avoid developing bad habits, like "rolling my thumb over the register key". Your thumb should be aligned so that it doesn't need to "roll" to operate this key.

I agree with David Peacham that you may not be ready for a 5JB.

Regards,
Hans

play a phrase on the low notes that you are comfortable with, (not going up to the throat area). Then open the register key and play the same fingering. It should just come out, no change in your mouth and no change in your fingers. The only thing that changes is a rocking motion which engages the register key with your left thumb. All the notes should just come out. If you get the opportunity, have someone else play the problem notes, just to check they are not hidding. You could be having a little leak there and however well you play the notes won't come out! Good luck.

1) Set the 5JB aside for a year and buy a close lay MP.
2) find a teacher.
(Or reverse the order and let the teacher help you select an appropriate MP.)
5JBs are hard enough to control for professionals. If you're at the level where you are just getting across the break, it's definitely not the MP for you.

good luck!
