Got an alternative mouthpiece for Darth Tone, my Alto. It's a hard-rubber Geo M. Bundy #3 in very nice [optical] condition. The acoustical merits are yet to be explored, as it requires careful pursing of lips, teeth and whatnot in order to produce a tone without shrieking. Chalumeau is fine, but from clarion upwards it starts to squeal unless one's very careful. It's not the familiar squeak, it's a screeching noise and I guess the facing is not quite perfect.
Would it be worthwile to have it refaced? Or would it be "lipstick on a pig"?

FWIW . . . I had a Bundy #3 Alto MP re-faced by Dave S. several years ago and the result (for me) was quite satisfactory . . . I believe the facing is "close" since it works well with VD #3 alto clarinet reeds.

Brad's quite right -- the older French-made Bundy 3s were hard rubber, with lousy factory-supplied facings but excellent in all other respects (interior dimensions, quality of material). More recently, hard rubber Bundys were made from American Babbitt blanks with the hard-rubber material and interior dimensions being of lower quality, but still salvageable by a good refacer. The most recent Bundy mouthpieces are molded plastic and probably not worth the effort to reface (although, hypocrite that I am, I'm doing one now just to see if I can get it to play!).

My son had two Bundy #3's refaced by David S. Both turned out pretty good. I have not heard any complaints from him, which sais a lot. In fact (I just asked him) he said that they are playing much better and he has better control with them being refaced. Thanks David!

Thanks, Carrie! Those two Bundy 3s, by the way, were made from American Babbitt blanks, not the better French ones.
