 Eb Ligature Problems.
Author: MattBowmanSmith

Hello all!

I just recently received my new Eb clarinet Mouthpiece (Vandoren B44) and Bonade Ligature (Regular). I am using cut down Bb reeds to play on my Eb and have a problem with the Ligature fitting over the mouthpiece while the reed is in place. The ligature fits fine with no reed, but once the reed is added the ligature it becomes too tight to fit onto the mouthpiece. Does anyone have any advice that I can do? I would like to use the same ligature if at all possible.

Thanks,
-Matt

I have that same problem. I have been forced to use a Rovner until I find something else. I really love my Bonade for my Bb. I wish the Eb Bonade would work.

Get longer screws...or just use regular Eb clarinet reeds, they're thinner.

I have the same setup, but wound up using an inverted Leblanc ligature. With the B44 you may need to sand your reeds narrower as well as cut them shorter. Full width Vandoren and Gonzales reeds have a nasty airy sound due to the excessive width. White Masters don’t usually need this treatment.

Hi!

You are right that some of the ligatures don't seem to work on sawed off Bb reeds even though they do with Eb reeds. Two ligatures that work easily with the sawed off Bb reeds are the Rovner and the Vandoren Optimum. Both give nice sound with my Behn, Grabner and Fobes mouthpieces. Have used sawed off VanDoren, FOF and Mozart reeds, all with success.

Good luck.

i use a ligature that came with a Vito student clarinet (i THINK that's where it came from, but couldn't be 100% sure). I've stuck a Bay "medium" mouthpiece patch on the inside of the ligature (opposite the screws) to take up some extra space, and had a jeweller stick two metal bars on by the screws so that the lig is impersonating a Bonade "screws under". This works very well with a Zinner mouthpiece blank and V12 B flat reeds.

I use an inverted-style Vandoren "Master" ligature (cheaper and simpler than their "Optimum") which works just fine for me on both crystal and hard-rubber mouthpieces.
