This may be a bit early to ask (as my daughter is 14 months and my son is approx - 1.5 months) but is it generally a good idea to try to teach your own kids music? Is it even a good idea to encourage your kids to play the same axe you do?
I currently teach piano, clarinet, and recorder, (and have for some time) but I've heard that some teachers won't teach their own kids. What's your impression?

The following statements are gut feeling. I am not a teacher, nor was I taught music by my parents, although starting to learn the piano when I was 7 was their suggestion. The clarinet was my idea when I was 10.
I would suggest that you encourage them to play whatever instrument (if any) they fall in love with. If you like twee little violin sonatas and they want to play thrash metal, then encouage them. They are still playing music, even if it not your taste. Also be prepared to accept the fact that they may not want to play any instrument but have other interests.
As for teaching your kids, I suggest not. Especially as they reach their teenage years, teaching them yourself is (from their point of view) just Mum and Dad having a go again, and more likely to put them off.

Practice with the kids - yes, definitely. Teach them? I wouldn't. Same instrument? Well, ask the kid.

It's way to early to worry about it, but I imagine that most musicians send their kids to someone else for their formal instruction.
What you can do as a parent is simply let your kid see you playing and enjoying your music in the home. Let them play whatever instrument that preferences, physiology and fate hook them up with, and just be there for them--to answer questions, show them neat tricks, etc.
Because musicians understand so well what success requires, many overdrive their kids at too young an age, and interfere too much with the child's experimentation.
Also, some kids respond well to formal instruction and some don't. Depending on their temperment and expectations some kids could go through several teachers. Keeping that outside the home helps to keep the home a friendlier atmosphere for your child's exploration.
I attended a clinic with Richard Stoltzman a few years ago where he was asked about how he got started playing. He noted that he started out trying all sorts of songs, and that his parents allowed him to play around without constantly pointing out his mistakes. (he, above all players, probably has a good handle on the anal-retentive tendencies of musicians in general and clarinetists in particular)
It's best for you as a musician parent to rise above all that, and simply set a good example. My early life was filled with hearing my mother practice her piano, and with good quality, logically structured music playing on the stereo. As a result, I was always interested in music and never considered it a chore.
