Hello!!!
Can anyone recommend a professional clarinet repair technician near South West Missouri??? If not, are there any repair persons that I could mail my clarinet to to get it's annual check-up???
Thanks!!!

Clayton:
There are several very good techs who are regulars on this board -- they might be some distance away from SW MO, but if you are going to mail or UPS the instrument, rather than take it in person, you would have no problem sending it to one of them. One of them, David Spiegelthal, in VA has a clarinet of mine at present.
I dast not mention the name of a tech who is not on this board, but if you really prefer one closer to you, contact me off-line via e-mail.

There's an outstanding technician in Leavenworth, KS. I'm not sure how far you are from her, but the name of the shop is Judi's Woodwind Shop. You can probably make an appointment with her, if you can take a day off to drive up there. It's a nice area. Her shop is on a farm, horse's and dogs everywhere. She's a character. Some of the Kansas City Symphony people go to her, and also some of the woodwind faculty people from the various school's. You can either google the name for her contact number, or e-mail me off-board.

I dont know of "qualified" repairers in Joplin or Springfield, there may be some in the latter. Its possible that [near/at] Pittsburg State College [KS], [KRPS 89.9 FM] having an active music program, might have someone. Otherwise, I can recommend two "shops" in Tulsa, [OK] from experience, and have some familiarity with Wichita Music [in W---, KS], they prob. have a web site. Just dont know about central/northern KS. Because of the lack of shops in N E OK, I'm frequently asked to make MINOR repairs, and to give advice, generally rec'g Tulsa , McGuires and/or "The Music Store". Can give addresses and/or phone #'s. A fine repairer in OK City also. Much luck, Don

Mark: Golly, I just thought I might do something wrong. I tend to take somewhat of a Zasu Pitts approach to things - less conflict & stress.
ClariTone: We do have Sage Music, a shop at Heber Springs in North Arkansas, run by Gary Sage. He's a great guy, a very good tech, and quite reasonable in cost. Since I don't know where you live in SW MO, I don't know whether Heber Springs or Tulsa is more convenient to you.

Some of those northern Arkansas places look close on the map, but when you have to make the drive you find out why the Ozarks are called mountains.
For little stuff, I use a local guy down here in Houston, but for overhauls, rebuilding and such, I've used the same guy up in Saint Louis MO for over thirty-five years: Marvin Krantz at St. Louis Woodwind and Brasswind Repair. All of the usual comments apply - they do the work for many of the St. Louis Symphony folks, and the wall of celebrity photos that they have is impressive indeed. (I've been told that I can be seen there as well - probably in an embarrassing pose, no doubt.)
Marvin's a bassoon player from way back, but he does equally well on anything made of wood or metal. I've had six to ten instruments comprehensively overhauled during that time span, as well as a complete wreck of a Conn alto saxophone from the 1920's rebuilt from the ground up, and all of it was top notch work.
They're up on the far northwest side of Saint Louis, off of Florissant Road north of the airport - a considerable day trip from Springfield but then again Springfield is a trip away from everywhere else save Springfield...

I know that Mike Lomax does clarinet repair and is based out of Springfield. He makes some wonderful mouthpieces as well.

TKS, EGS and TS, its good to know of other good repairers in our "midwest". Yer so rite, Terry, travelling Ark's Ozarks down to Heber Springs [at perhaps 40- mph] from ?Spring.? MO on US 65- 62, in spite of scenery, will have MANY road-curves. Its Wichita Band Inst. Co in my post. Don

P.S. It looks like Adam has taken care of finding someone in SW MO, so you can park the horse.

I sent a Leblanc LL clarinet to Russelville, Arkansas and was absolutely shocked at the beautiful and (dare I say) perfect clarinet I received a few days ago. I think he is advertising overhauls for virtually any clarinet on the popular aucton site. His user name is "hornfixer". Excellent workmanship especially fork Bb, connection of the two joints and the little finger B on either hand. He claims "original specifications of the new horn" I tend to agree.
stay well, and try this fellow.

Clay-
Judi is my tech as well and has been for 2 years. She's great! And yes she is a character indeed. You can't go out of Judi's shop and not hear something funny out of her mouth. I go to Judi at Antioch Music and it's either in Gladstone or North Kansas City. She comes by a couple times a week and is always there Saturday mornings to adjust things to your own likings.
Also, Springfield isn't too far from Joplin, I would second the Mike Lomax comment.
But, if you need Judi's number, contact me and I'll get it to you.

Wow.... $500 per overhaul..... is kind of shocking.
Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

Ouch on the $500. When I go to Judi I will first call her, then leave a note inside the case of what I need repaired (which I tell her on the phone before as well). In the note I will be very specific about my problems I'm having and what I know needs fixed, and lastly I end the note with "whatever it needs to be in its top playing condition". To get some new pads, the keys silenced, the clarinet cleaned, a Hasty pad for the register key (looks like a little needle that's supposed to help going over the break and/or articulation over it), and adjusting it should be $300 or less. The most I've ever had to pay was around $180 and that was for crack repair, silencing, and a few new pads. She's very reasonable.
