 Mouthpiece testing

What do you all use to prevent your upper teeth from scratching (gouging, mangling) mouthpieces you are evaluating?
Some sort of tape? What would put up with the moisture and not be toxic?

I'm going to try out a used clarinet (and one or more moutpieces) next week, and don't want to damage the goods before I buy.

Thanks,
W

Thick mouthpiece patches. Not that expensive. A lot less expensive than buying a mouthpiece because it was damaged and you couldn't return it. Also, a piece of masking tape AROUND the mouthpiece to prevent ligature scratches.

I've also seen little pieces of electrical tape to be used in lieu of mouthpiece patches. But that's up to you.

Electrical tape works fine as a patch for trialing mouthpieces as long as you stack two or three pieces on top of one another, just to be safe. One layer may not be thick enough.

It comes off easily afterwards too.

Just a little tweak to the tape idea. I find that 3M Plastic tape is much more durable (and less stretchy) than electrical tape. I still double it up but use a long patch and flip it when one side wears down. It gets about two months of use and is MUCH cheaper than any of the commercially available products.

...but 3M plastic tape IS electrical tape. Maybe you are thinking of rubber electrical tape.....which isn't used any longer?

3M Plastic tape is not UL approved. It is found mostly in craft sections of hardware stores. It comes in a wide variety of colors that would not be suited for electrical work. And lastly, I used to work for electrical engineers and none of them ever used 3M plastic tape.
