When I search on some topic, same thread shows up many, many times.
and I usually give up after 10 or so reviews.
Shouldn't each topic's thread show up only once?
And because search word is not highlighted, you have to look for whole
thread to find the key words.
I know this is not a clarinet topic per se,but probably many reders feel same way and hesitate using "search"
I don't know about web design but it could be much more useful and easy to use.

Each article has it's own entry in the database; if articles on the same thread hit, then each one gets its own entry. That's also true with the Google indexing of the BBoard.

Not really - which of maybe 100 posts on a thread is the right one or ones?

This is more complex than most people realize. Your search words are not only checked for an exact match, but are checked using a "fuzzy" and stemming algorithm so that words that are close or are variants also get returned.

Yes, it could, given time & money. I'd switch to Google indexing only if Google would be significantly faster in picking up the new entries.

Most of the frustration is the result of our modern day expectations of instant gratification. Even Google searches turn up repeats and endless paths. Besides the fact that many facts are only opinions. Don't give up....you just might find something you didn't want initially.....like a blind date.

You'll get multiple entries, but each time the whole thread is displayed - I simply press ctrl-f (browser's find function) an presto! I can hop from hit to hit within the thread.
A wise choice of search words ("clarinet" isn't the most clever idea ever) will narrow the results considerably. Just for kicks I do the same in google and sometimes get an interesting result outside of the BBoard.
Remember that "literature research" is a considerable amount of work in science, and it got comparatively super-easy since the advent of computers, the internet and Google. Be grateful for every hit you get.

Well said T T T, I've had a number of years experience in complex patent/literature searching [chemical and engineering]. Some systems use only a few of the Logic functions such as AND and [perhaps] OR, a very comprehensive DuPont patent search program [my company subscribed to] included NAND and NOR. It was very precise, but trickey, due to document indexing. Now some systems include [search for] only titles and possibly authors [inventors/assignees for my specialty, patents], others may also include "summaries", the best being full-text searching, Thanks, Lord for "big" computers ! So, many systems are in use, and searching technique must be developed. Our good English-American language has so many words available [as in MY Fair Lady !], and we have many instances of several words meaning essentially the same thing so that synonem[?] and dictionary look-up is needed, to be comprehensive, and as Mark said some "fuzziness" is also helpful. I've always found some "false-drop" to be reassuring. Sorry to be ?garroulous[sp?], its a fav. subject. Don
Thanx, Mark, Don
