If this was supposed to sound like a clarinet, someone messed up.

You wouldn't try to record a pipe organ by puting the microphone inside the pipes, if you wanted it to sound like a pipe organ.

All the reverb in the world can't save it.

Less is more, indeed.
I place my mp3 stick on the music stand, press "record" and then get going.

Usually you would use two mics. One at the bell and one in the middle of the clarinet. Eddie Daniels has a good set up if you have the $$. I use one high quality condenser mic on the top corner of my music stand aimed at my belt buckle.

Mic too close, signal is distorted at the mic preamp.

Can't evaluate the sound of the instrument with basic recording flaws like that.

Room sound is the way to go with wind instruments within a classical context. The only time I'd close mic a clarinet is for live jazz/pop work.

I did a jingle yesterday, and the mic was placed about 2.5 feet away from the instrument. Any closer and there's too much air and key noise.
