So of the three, are there any thoughts as to which is the best buy for the serious amateur ("casual" pro) with a tight budget under $1,500?

I'd of course try all three, and several of each ideally. You and maybe a listener should decide which helps you sound your best.

I'd certainly like to have time to run to every music store in a 20-mile radius. For me, this is not practical but I know that choosing a horn is personal and similar to a marraige; once the choice is made then that's it!
