 Question about tenon rings
Author: Amy D

I have a question that everyone I talk to has a different opinion. If your tenon rings are loose I know that it is dangerous and could crack. I also know that you can have them professionally tightened. It only happens when I am at school because the climate there is fairly dry. Right now my tenon rings on the bell and the lower joint are loose(the latter much more than the former). However, at home the weather is much more humid. My question is that if I had the rings tightened would my clarinet crack when I am at home. I think that it would crack because the wood is going to expand with the increased amount of moisture in the air. My clarinet teacher seems to think that it would not crack and told me it is much more important to have the rings tightened. I also talked to someone at a music store, but not a repair person. What should I do? Thanks.

Tighten those rings!!! Do not delay!!!!!
To tighten the ring your self, just slide off the metal ring.. use a strip of paper... cut it to the width of the metal ring.. and just long enough to go all the way around the wood ... then place the cut piece of paper between the wood and the ring and slide the ring on... some force may be requiered to "Hammer" the ring on ... just don't over do it ... you may have to try this a few times to get the right fit... but it is the best way to stop the wood from cracking in a dry environment. if your worried the wood will expand again when you get back home, just remove the paper. Take care... and happy playing.

there are only a few repairmen have ring tightener
one adequate method is to do it your self
stick a layer of frost tape around the joint
and put the ring back, if still loose
use 2 layers of tape. most repairmen
do it this way

I have also heard that tape works well... it is flexible and will allow the wood to expand and contract freely as needed.

I live in a very wintery, dry climate. My rings come loose often.

They are right paper works good. Tape I have not tried, but I do this when my rings come off.

With the ring off I take bore oil and saturate the wood that the ring covers. then I saturate the inside of the joint. Then place the ring back on. It will still be loose. leave overnight. The next day the wood usually has expanded enough to grip the rings tightly. Works for me!

I do not like to use paper unless they just will not stay tight.

Whatever you do, do not put the instrument together unless those rings are on tight. Unless you want to increase your chances of cracking by say 95%.
