 Buffet Festival

I mentioned in an earlier thread that my daughter is upgrading her clarinet. She has been demo-ing E11's, R13's and she has just tried a Festival (which she liked). Can someone tell me where this stands in relation to the R13 and what they typically sell for? I have read that they were at one time priced to give an advantage to smaller shops, but now they seem to be priced higher (because of demand?). I know they are limited in availability and seem to be sought after.

It's longish but will give you quite a comprehensive overview.

You can call any of the sponsors on this bboard to find out what their own minimum price is. But there is a price that they are unable to go below by contract.

The Festival deviates from all other models Buffet makes - particularly in the case of intonation. Be sure that it is tried with a tuner and that there is a good mthpc/clarinet combination to play the upper 2nd register in tune. With some mthpcs the A, B, and C above the staff are impossibly flat - with other mouthpieces, they're fine.

The Festival is capable of allowing one to make a beautiful sound on the clarinet but it is not capable of playing in tune with some mouthpieces made today.

I agree with Greg's comments. I've owned a couple of Festivals and even had one set up by the Brannens with proper voicing, etc. Alas, I ended up selling both of them because it was not a great instrument to "play with others." Also, I found it had a bit of a brighter tone and was difficult to get a lot of volume with on solos. I loved the key action, however.

Interesting- my Festival A plays with excellent intonation as does my friends one (which she picked from Muncy about 18 months ago). James Fry, the 2nd clarinet in the Philharmonia, just told me on Tuesday that the good intonation on his pair of Festivals was the main reason he played them (James plays Greg Smith moutpiece with a Chadash barrel). Odd too that the complaint i've heard from two or three pro players about the tone on the Festival model is that it's too dark, and doesn't "ring" enough- this doesn't fit with Brendas comments, which i'm sure describe her experience accurately.
I've just changed from a Festival A to an RC A, and wish that the RC had intonation as good as that on my Festival! (it definately has a "sweeter" tone). I'm no fan of the Festival model- but curious to note that the opinions i had noted as prevailing is contrary to that given above.
