 Recordings

I have recently been trying to expand my library of clarinet recordings, but I need a little help. I was at Barnes and Noble(a local book/music store, if you don't have them) and bought Stoltzman playing the Copland/Stravinsky/Corigliano, but after browsing through what they can order, I encountered some problems. I could find no recording of the Bozza concerto. There were lots of other Bozzas, but no clarinet concerto. I also couldn't find the Francaix. I found about 15 recordings of the Nielsen, but they were all Danish, and I'd never heard of any of the soloists. Can anyone tell me if there are recordings of the Francaix and Bozza, and if so what are they? And also can someone reccomend a recording of the Nielsen? I especially need a recording of that because I'm TRYING to play it =P Thanks for your help.

For the Nielson, I like John Bruce Yeh's rendition. Musically, I prefer the Bozza (just my humble opinion).

The Legbandt LP is called "A French Clarinet Recital" or something like that. It's a fabulous record and well worth searching out. It has the best version ever of the Poulenc Sonata. Legbandt teaches at Ball State. You might be able to get a copy through him.

All the recordings of the Francaix concerto are amazing. I think it was dedicated to Lancelot, who made the original recording. I think the Gabai recording is the best one, and it has the advantage that Francaix is conducting the orchestra. However, it's on a French label and went in and out of print quickly. The last time I looked, A Classical Record in NYC had a copy, but they're not cheap.

Quido also asked for recommendations for recordings and study material on the Nielsen Concerto. There are two wonderful articles on Sneezy: <A HREF=http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Study/Nielsen.html>http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Study/Nielsen.html<A> and <A HREF=http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Study/NielsenNotes.html>http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Study/NielsenNotes.html<A>.

I think Niels Thomsen has made a commercial recording of the Nielsen Concerto. The Stevensson recording has been reissued on CD and should be readily available. Even though the article writer doesn't care for the Drucker and Cahuzac recordings, they are essential listening. Drucker's virtuosity is astounding, and he makes excellent music even if it's not completely idiomatic. Cahuzac is out of his depth technically, but his musicianship is marvelous.

Rich Gilbert's enormous clarinet discography lists a mysterious Oxenvad recording of the concerto on Musical Heritage Society. I asked him about it, and he said he had never seen it, but had only copied a listing in an old MHS catalog. He said it may have been an aircheck issued on 78s only in Europe. I've been trying to find it for a while, with no success.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

I have an old Stanley Drucker recording of the Neilsen but I don't know if it's still available.

Yes, Drucker's Nielsen recording (w/NY Phil & Bernstein) from the mid-1960s is available on CD. Was recently reissued by Sony Classical as part of a series of CDs in collaboration with Prince Charles' historic restoration fund. The CD also includes Nielsen's Flute Concerto and Hindemith's Violin Concerto. I bought it at Tower Records.

I enjoy Drucker's rendition of the Nielsen, but after reading the above-mentioned article, I'm curious to hear how the Danish clarinetists sound. AFter listening to the Drucker recording I bought the music and started playing it myself - it's actually more playable than it sounds, especially now that I know it's supposed to sound rough-hewn and peasant-like (that's my technique alright!) Lots of fun.
