Hello, fellow clarinetists. I am sorry to report that my 1998 Buffet Prestige (1193-2 serial #31117) bass clarinet was among the items stolen from my apartment during a daytime burglary in Evanston, Illinois last Tuesday, May 23. The instrument was not insured. I doubt it could have traveled far, but I am offering a reward of $500 for information leading to the recovery of my horn. A police report was filed, and I will keep tabs on the pawnshops in the Chicago area and EBAY. I'm not sure if the thief would have discarded my mouthpieces and such. Either way, keep an open eye for this instrument. I can be reached at 847.492.0723.

Not only check eBay occasionaly but the pawn shops as well. Note that most pawn shops won't put it out on display for about 90 days if were used for a loan rather than sold to them outright. The laws vary on this from state to state. Also have friends check the neighboring towns as near and far away as possible. When our school bandhall was raided a couple years ago, the instruments were pawned here in Texas, but the pawn shop, part of a national chain had moved them and they located in one of their stores in Chicago.

If a fence decides to sell this rare clarinet, maybe on eBay, someone might pop up here first, to ask how much it's worth. Suggestion: if somebody asks about the value of a Buffet bass, let's not tell where to get the date/serial number information the way we usually do. Say the value depends on the serial number and try to get the person to provide it. Since the rightful owner knows his serial number, he could then identify the instrument and sic the law on the fence (or whoever buys from the fence).
Chances are the person who did the actual burglary is a down-and-out looking for fast money, who will fence the goods, so it might take awhile before someone starts trying to get real money out of the bass clarinet. Most crooks aren't bright or diligent (or else they'd be doing something better for a living), so maybe someone will pop up here but not bother to look far enough into the BB to find this thread. Keep eyes out at flea markets and "junktiques" shops, too. Honest dealers and flea market regulars love to see the crooks get caught, because they give flea markets a bad reputation. Hope you get your clarinet back.

Excellent idea, Lelia, I'm sure many of our surfers will keep eyes wide open. There are of course many legitimate inst. dealers who would be delighted to re-sell such a prize B C. This is a great rally-call to horns!! Don

Consider sending emails to the legitimate music stores in the general area (including my area, Indianapolis) alerting them to your stolen instrument. I would think it would be pretty rare for someone to come into a store trying to sell a pretty new pro-model bass clarinet, so it should be easy for someone to spot. And with a few exceptions, most don't keep 1193-2's in stock.
