I just got back from New York and a total musical immersion.
First: Wicked.
Big stage show, with John Moses of this BB in the pit.(I couldnt really see the pit players very well, but the sound they generate is as huge as the special effect onstage)
Fun show and I believe I was hearing some great bass clar. parts.
I can NOT imagine a show like this without LIVE musicians. The show is a bit heavy on message for my tastes, but B-way is not always subtle.
Next: The MET and LaGioconda. This is one looongggg opera, with some nice clar. writing.
The singing roles were superb. The ballet soloists were phenomenal as well. This is a huge hall, but the acoustics and visual impact make for a memorable evening.
Lastly, the NYPhil.
I had the unique privilege of a backstage look-see with Mark Nuccio as my host for the open rehearsal in the am. A finer gentleman and player you could never imagine.
The program began with Dunbarton Oaks conc. for orch by Stravinsky. Stanley Drucker was the lone clarinet for this work, already on stage, warming up, and looking 20 years younger than his age. Amazing.
The French horns really work overtime on this piece. Avery Fisher hall is a cavern, yet they manage to fill it with sound.
Gil Shaham did double duty with a Moz violin concerto and then a Stravinsky Violin conc.
The latter is more of a concerto for orhestra with violin....heck, it even used a tuba.
There were many exposed clarinet parts, incl. Ebs. in this work, with gloriously rich clarinet sounds from Mr Nuccio and company. A sound to file under the "I wish I could play like that" category.
What a week!

Thanks for the nice comments on our show, WICKED, and yes, there is a lot of Bass Clarinet in the show. In fact two of us play Bass Clarinet. My Book is Reed 3, and I play Eb, Bb, Bass Clarinet, and Soprano Sax. Johnny Campo is Reed 4, and he plays Bb & Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Flute, and Bari Sax, so you hear lots of Bass Clarinets at WICKED...!

You bet.....and those basses sounded GOOD...or is it Wicked Good.
I have NO idea how you juggle so many parts and keep it all fresh. Kudos.

thats always nice that a fellow performer will respond in the clarinet forums. good to always know that they're open to feedback. haven't seen wicked yet, but have the soundtrack.
