 Music Software

Has anyone purchased music software for composing/transcribing/transposing? I'm looking for software for my Mac and am wondering what's good, easy to use and not tremendously expensive.

Being frugal (cheap), I decided to give NoteWorthy Composer a try. You can download it for free as a demo copy at http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/composer/. Almost all the features of the programs are included in the demo version, but you are limited to 10 file saves. Give it a try, you can always delete it if you are unsatisfied. If you decide to purchase the program, it's only $40.

I mainly use NoteWorthy Composer to transpose parts to accompany our church choir. (This is a LOT faster than how I used to do it - by hand!) The program is simple to use and really all that I need. I guess it all depends on how involved you wish to get with music composition.

I've used Noteworthy for the past couple of years and have no complaints. The latest version, which has such refinements as grace notes, creates a very professional looking score.

You shouldn't pass up a look at SIBELIUS music notation software. It really has caught on and you can download a demo version to explore it.

I use noteworthy and it really works rather well for my purposes. I appreciate the value, a great product, reasonable in price.

I've been using PrintMusic 2000 for 6 months and I'm very pleased with it. Easy to use, great features, excellent scores. I tried demos of all the others before I bought it. It costs US$69.95 from Coda Music.

Try a demo from their site http://www.codamusic.com

You won't be disappointed.

Good luck,

Roger Harvey

Funny how no-one mentioned Finale Allegro ($199 CDN) or Overture ($249 CDN). The latter program is especially good for the Mac; very user-friendly, easy MIDI input. Finale Allegro has pretty much everything most musicians needs, but Overture is the equivalent of the full version of Finale, at less than 1/2 the cost.

The easiest, most intuitive music software is MusicTime Deluxe from GVOX. It runs about $70 and is available for the Macintosh. Noteworthy Composer, although a fine program, is not available for the Mac.

MusicTime Deluxe allows much more control over tempo and dynamics than PrintMusic. While I have PrintMusic, I use it only to read the Finale & Finale Allegro files available on the internet due to the fact that the interface is not particularly user friendly.

Sibelius, Finale, and Encore (MusicTime's big brother) are $500 programs unless you get the academic pricing.

Finale Allegro is approximately $200 but doesn't have enough additional features when compared to PrintMusic to make it worth the difference if all you are doing is basic transposition.
