 update on director
Author: Nicole Y.

He's leaving. He's going to be like a vice principal at the middle school, I think. Now we're all waiting to see who the new band director will be. If they're both exactly alike, I am gone, but if he's not, well I'll be in marching band but I can't be in the class 'cause I have no room in my schedule.

You need to realize that not all band teacher are the same. I've had some pretty crappy ones in my lifetime, and I've also had some absolutely fabulous ones. Don't prejudge this new director before he or she even gets there. And remember that even after he/she gets there there will be a period of adjustment. The new director has to get used to you just as much as you need to get used to him or her.

So, you need to meet this new director with an attitude of understanding and willingness to adapt to his/her style of teaching.

Good luck,
Frank

She was having problems with her old director. Although you don't care, I was very happy to hear the problem took care of itself. So to answer your question, I care.

Well, I thought this was a bulletin board to discuss the clarinet and not people's personal problems/relationships! These "Oh, how I hate my Director" postings are like accident scenes - you really don't want to look but your curiosity gets the better of you. Then you read them and you think "Why do these individuals solicit answers to personal problems from people they have never met or know anything about?" Face it, we very rarely know anything about the people who post to this bulletin board. I just returned to the clarinet after a 20 yr hiatus, so I use the advice of posters to better my playing. If their advice does not work, that's no big loss. I would never send a post that deals with a personal matter.

Judging by the subject matter of most of these "personal postings", I would venture a guess that most are sent by young people in their mid to early teens. I think that it is inappropriate for young people to be broadcasting such matters to the world in hopes of finding the right answers. These are things that are best discussed with close friends and family.

So before I get off my soap box, let me just say that although bulletin boards are great places for advice on certain matters, we should be careful of what kind of advice we are seeking. Don't assume that the person responding has your best interests in mind.

I must apologize for my harsh response to the previous post entitled "Update on director" - it was a knee jerk reaction.

Cheers,

Sean

Look okay, if you don't want to respond, please don't. It does have something to do with the clarinet because I and my classmates' skills have drastically fallen with this band director. What do you do when your band class is a study hall? The answer is get involved in the Youth Orchestra if you can and/or get a private teacher if you can afford it. Start your own group. Do whatever it takes. What do you have against some teenagers? Yeah, you can ask close friends and parents but they are IN it. And everyone knows that the people OUTSIDE of a problem see clearer than the people in it. You didn't read my first post about this problem, so of course, you wouldn't care. I am happy this problem resolved itself. And I'm even thinking of staying in band again. The band director that's leaving says he wants my old band director from middle school to teach us. And that would be heaven!

Ciao,
Nicole

Hey Nicole Y,

Ok, first of all, don't worry about directors, that's the least of your problems as long as the school hires one. Personal tastes are what determine whether a teacher is great or crummy. I know, I've been through a lot of different directors, especially changes in the music staff at my old high school every year.

Remember, whether a director is a "jerk" or whatever kind of names we students describe them as doesn't mean you can't learn from them. I personally hated my middle school director. He had this attitude of everything having to be band and nothing else, I used to hate the things he'd push on us, now I understand it, and it's something I take personally for myself. I also learned the importance of constant practice, even during summer breaks, in a person's life, since his class I've never failed to pick up my horn at least twice a week during time off.

Also, don't judge the new guy, I mean you have to stay very open-minded, even if it's hard at first. I had to get used to two new directors this year, and I made sure I gave them a chance... Don't close yourself off just because you want to hold someone new up to an old standard. I figure, you learned from someone before, but it's the new people that will teach you new things, things you've never tried before. Let the guy have his shot, convince your friends to open up and invite him into the program, don't treat him like an outcast before he even has a chance to introduce himself.

Remember, friendliness is the key to finding out how a person may do in a new position. Don't play the villian by giving up before even starting. As for being in marching band or not, that shouldn't depend on a director either, if you like moving and shaking while playing your horn, then just do it.

Joey

Stop crying and start practicing. If you get good enough you won't need anyone to hold your hand all the time.
