I was thinking about trying out the Eddie Daniels mouthpiece recently because it is said to be a great classical piece as well as a jazz piece. I was wondering if any classical players here play on the Daniels or if anyone has tried one.

I bought one a few months ago. I had been playing on a old Bay MO-M for years. I ordered several different brands to try. It was about the 3rd one I played and I knew it was THE ONE. I was surprised it worked so much better for me than what I was used to. I didn't even have to get used to it. The sound was really good. I play primarily classical music and I can tongue so much better it was scary. I felt like I really had to work to cleanly play certain pieces. With this mouthpiece music just seemed to happen. I did find that the 3.5 56 Rue Lepic Vandoren reeds work best (they look and play a lot like the old Morre reeds I used to use) I tried all three strengths with this and the 3 will close up a little and the 4's are just a little air-ish, but I guess you could adjust them down if necessary. This mouthpiece blew much freer, but never out of control. The internals just happen. This is by far the best mouthpiece I have ever played on.
It would be well worth your time to try it out. Everybody's different, but I will recommend it to my students.

I second that. I was introduced to the mouthpiece when trying the Concerto II which comes standard with the Eddie Daniels. It is very focused, has great control in all registers and allows wonderfully quick articulation.

Mr. Aviles,
I've read in a recent thread that you're playing on a Greg Smith mouthpiece, that you chose over a Richard Hawkins. How does the Eddie Daniels compare to both the Smith and the Hawkins? (I'm curious because my teacher here at college is recomending Hawkins to ALL his students, but if something plays better, I'd like to try it.)

Daniels is a machine produced, machine faced Zinner product with the idea to include in the Concerto line (which he endorses) clarinet case. Perhaps sold separately.

I had the great fortune to attend a masterclass and jazz recital led by Eddie Daniels at the University of North Texas last year. I can't say enough about what an impressive man and musician he is.
Leblanc displayed Concertos with their Eddie Daniels mouthpieces. I looked carefully at three mouthpieces and each had what I took to be a flaw:
The right rail on each mouthpiece had a visible peak about one third of the way up from the base of the window. By that I mean that when I tilted the mouthpiece so that the overhead light reflected off the rails, the right rail looked like it was made of two flat sections (not a smooth curve) with a noticeable point (peak) where the two flats met.
I had never seen anything like that before. To the eye, the resistance curves of the rails were clearly different. I quickly lost interest in testing that mouthpiece.

Dear Rizz and Ray,
Ray: Resistance curves are hard enough to judge with gauges let alone the eye. I sincerely hope you tried one before giving up on it. That said, they are not "hand made," and there is more variety from one to the other but the one I purchased two years ago was only slightly better than the three others that I tried -- all were very good.
Rizz: Direct comparisons become hard as I have morphed along in the last year. For many MANY years I would only play the standard nr.4 Vandoren reed (what I used on the Daniels). In a recent transitional phase with a Vandoren mouthpiece (5RV Lyre Profile 88 13 Series) I wound up switching to Rue Lepic 56s. I would like to add that I realize these reeds are better suited to mouthpieces with longer lays, SOME mouthpieces with longer lays.
Now, the Smith and the 56s are a very good match indeed but when I go back to the Daniels the results I had gotten BEFORE would take a little work and a switch back in reeds.
For now I will rely on my memory of the good results.
Sorry. I forgot to add that the Smith I have is made of Cocobolo (Greg Smith offers a variety of exotic woods for his whole line) which adds another dimension to the sound and feel. Since I had success with other wood mouthpieces in the past I knew this was a direction I wanted to go for now.
