Julliard impossible to get into? No more than Curtis (which, if anything, ranks even harder to get into).

Cleveland requires academics for a bachelors, none for a "performance certificate", which I think you will find to be de rigueur for all the conservatories.

Get the bachelors unless you already have a good-paying job in music. If you have to change careers someday a B.A. in Music at least contains some credits applicable to the new career, or, in many cases, a bachelors in anything is required for the job.

As of the late 80's Oberlin required 24 unspecified credits outside of the Conservatory. I ended up taking German (3 or 4 semesters of advanced-level stuff), Comparative Religions, and even Acting and Drawing.

You can always check the websites for these places; they should all have their requirements for study somewhere hiding.

My opinion for what it's worth:

Music jobs that you can support yourself by are getting scarcer every day. Many excellent musicians end up working in another field (or behind the scenes in the arts world) - these are jobs that you need other skills and experience for. Please get a well-rounded education that you can use, whatever you end up doing.

You might even find that you like things you never you would interest you!

I've always felt that well-rounded people made better musicians anyway. And definitely more interesting people!

There are several schools with undergrad level conservatory diploma programs. My alma mater, the Boston Conservatory is one of them. I think Eastman offers a performer's certificate, and actually, most of the conservatories offer this sort of degree.
I have to discourage people in general from pursuing them, as they are useless in any field except music, and having a Bachelor's degree allows the pursuit of advanced degree work in other fields. Furthermore, the academic requirements to earn a Bachelor's degree at most schools are usually very easy compared to a university, and not much more expensive than the diploma program.

Peabody requires several "liberal arts' classes. There is an oppurtunity to take many academic classes. I chose not to.

The classes i did take were extremely easy, even to a point of just being hilarious. For one thing, if apr. 50% of the class doesn't speak english, the class can't be too hard.

I join those on this thread that discourage omitting those "breadth" courses. It really pays to have a broad ecucation --and to learn the location of the library.

Well said Anon. Being well rounded is desirable as it is not guaranteed that there will be a demand for your skills out there. i mean there are demands, but you just have to think about the wcs (worst case scenario)

Unless its a foreign language class =P

I'm with Mark here. While academic subjects within a music degree may seem pointless at the time, they will be of valuable benefit after your studies. I did my degree in Scotland where things may be slightly different, but certainly a BA is more broadly applicable in general work. A straight Bmus with music only basically narrows your career options to music, both a narrow and precarious career.
