Has anyone tried the new E-11? How is it different from the old E-11 apart from the silver plated keys? How's the tuning of the instrument?
Are there any new clarinets brands or models which are priced less than an R-13 but is better than an E-11? I am looking for one which provides more resistance.

There is the E-13. It is the would have been could have been R13 that didn't quite make it through the tests. It's one under the R13, i'm guessing, and one above the E-11. IMHO i think it's better to save up for the R13. I've never had an experience with this horn but with it being from Buffet i'm sure it is gorgeous.

Actually, the E13 and the rest of the Evette line (E12, E11, International, C13) are all made in Germany, not France. So the E13's aren't quite R13's that didn't make it. But the Evette is pretty good for the price. Shoot for the R13.

The E-13 is not made in Germany like the E-11. It is made in France, in the same factory as the R-13. Whether it is an R-13 that failed the tests or not, it plays pretty well. My clarinet teacher is constantly amazed when he tries my E-13 that it is so good. He reckons that with his mouthpiece and barrel and my E-13, it's as good as an R-13 any day. This may be just my luck in getting one that only barely failed the R-13 test! :^)

The newer e11 are really great horns. I think their keys seem scloser together and your fingers move over them really well and the silver plating gives them a nice feel. Its a nice horn and it has great intonation as well.

I just bought a new E-11 in December. How do I know if it is a new version or not? Serial number or? I dont have a older version to compare it to.

I don't know about the older evette series clarinets but I own a newer E-11 that I bought about two months ago and I must say that it is a lovely horn. It's beautiful and sounds great. I don't have any problems with it and I find that for my budget and needs it was a great choice.

Other than the e-13 you can consider the E-12 It runs for $1000 brand new from the woodwind catolog (1-800-348-5003)
Or I would recomend the Leblanc Sonata which runs for just a little over $1000 from the woodwind catolog. I think weiner music might be cheaper than the woodwind catolog.

If you search this bulletin board, you will find authoritative information (supplied by a Buffet rep) that the E-13 is indeed made in France and was eliminated from the R-13 for cosmetic reasons. So basically they should perform the same with the same horn to horn variability as the R-13. Some will be gems and some will be dogs.

Comparing the E-11 to the Festival, now there are some significant differences. Generally speaking, the E-11 is very much a high quality intermediate grade horn. I test played one a few years back and it was every bit the match of equal "big four" competitor intermediate horns. Comparing the E-13 to the R-13, just like Dee said, is a horn-by-horn selection process. I've heard of some fantastic E-13s. I've personally seen some of the dog R-13s of late 1970s to mid 1980s manufacture. They are pretty bad as pro grade class horns.
Do your homework and test play the horn before you buy it. That's the only way you can get a decent horn for your money.
