JessKateDD,
Thank you for the link. I have a DVD copy of the movie, but this made it easy to let some of my fellow band members see it.
Regards,
Hans

"Worst movie movie he ever made"--???? Questionable........
However, I do seem to recall reading somewhere that Artie considered it "preposterous" that his band would be featured at a college campus playing "in concert". He said, "Back then, bands played for dances, not concerts". None the less, it does have some wonderful footage of a young Artie Shaw and his band, including a rather informal performance of his CONCERTO FOR CLARINET.

Any tips to spots in the movie worth checking out? (i.e., specific time references instead of watching the whole 1.5 hours.)
Thanks
Alex M.

What I find about Mr. Shaw's playing is how absolutely effortless it seems...he just whales though that Concerto...and that Gliss to high G is a thing of beauty...try that one at home and the neighbours will kick you out!

Yes, Artie was a master of the upper register's highest notes and doing glisses and, as you say, seemed to do it effortlessly. Many (most?) of the masters lived with their horns in their hands and that allowed for time to learn things some of us are still struggling to learn.

I recently bought a DVD called "Artie Shaw The Band Keeps Swinging", which is a video of a 1985 performance of the Artie Shaw orchestra with Artie conducting and Dick Johnston playing the clarinet (and some alto sax), plus an interview with Artie.
Dick is good, but not nearly as good a clarinetist as Artie was and his playing certainly isn't "effortless". There will never be another Artie.
In this interview Artie said that he still owned only three clarinets - two Buffets in Bb, which were "the best clarinets that I ever found" and an A clarinet.

William, here's the wikipedia link quoting Astaire as saying this was his worst film:

It seems that neither he nor Artie cared for it. But the one thing that is priceless is that it captures Shaw and his band at their peak.

Thanks--and for the record, I found the film to be rather amusing. Something to watch if you don't want your brain to be overworked. And, of course, watching Artie effortlessly breeze through his CONCERTO FOR CLARINET is priceless.
