 Howarth? Patricola?

Can anyone share with me their opinions or knowledge about these two clarinet brands. They are not readily available here in Australia so it is not really possible for me to try them. I really would like a clarinet outside of the "big four" since LeBlancs and Selmers are also unavailable (and too costly) and Buffets and Yamahas IMHO have many inherent faults.

I have played a Patricola A clarinet for about 3 years. It was seriously worked over by Charles Bay in Los Angeles so I am not sure how a stock instrument would be. The key work is holding up well and is smooth and a joy to play. It hasn't cracked. I like the projection it gets. It plays better in tune than my Buffet Bb. It was $$ well spent.

I also play 2nd to a 1st clarinetist who has a Howarth Bb/A set. I think it has some of the same capabilities of tone and projection as my Patricola....it was easy to blend with her sound.

Hi,

I don't actually play any of the above Brands, but i have been to Howarths of London for advice on my Clarinet and for accessorise. I have seen and heard people in the shop playing the Howarth Clarinet and it sounds brilliant in my opinion!

I have never personaly played a howarth or patricola. I contacted both companies a wile back for a reaserch report. They were very friendly. Wichita band carries howarth so you moght want to contact them and ask them thier oppinions. www.wichitaband.com
also if you contact the companies directly they should be more than happy to send you literature.

THey are both listed in the resource section I believe.

Graham

I live in London, and bought a Howarth at their shop about 3 years ago, after trying all the top of the range instruments in the various brands.I love playing it.In my personal opinion the tone of the Howarth was much nicer than the others, and it is much easier to blow. (Useful to an amateur like me). I suggest you check out their website (do an online search, or I have their address somewhere). Maybe they can put you in touch with a local supplier.Have never heard the Patricola.
Steve.
