I forgot to ask, I will need an A clarinet quite soon. Should I get the matched set, and aside from the As lower range, is there a difference in the fingerings for the two?

No, there is not difference in fingering. And if you are approaching a point in your life when you are going to need an A clarinet, go ahead and get one now (if the money is available). If your grandfather is will to shell out $4000 - 5000 for a set, go for it.
