 Case molding help
Author: ChrisArcand

I just bought a Protec double case, A and Bb, and I have a question about case moldings:

When the case is closed, is it okay to have any keys be pressed down? Not nessessarily *hard*, just closed. The reason I ask is that my left side low E lever on my Bb is pressed down, closing the low pads, etc. The key and related pads have plenty of room to be pressed down, so there's no obvious bending issues. If you haven't seen the specific case I talk about, it has a large "pillow" type top side of the molding, and this cushion is pressed down against the instruments.

I've tried to press down the molding so that it doesn't press too much - It's been a little successful. As I said, I'm pretty sure that the keys aren't in any danger of being bent from what I see. I'm just concerned that keys on clarinets in cases should be open so as to air out pads or something like that.

And yes, I HAVE searched for answers before I posted this, so please don't state the completely obvious and tell me to click the search button without telling me anything else. But if you do know of a post I haven't seen, that's okay too. :-)

Thanks!
Chris

When I bought a new Buffet recently they included a key closer that plugged in the top tenon of the lower joint and closed the low e key. Apparently there is some good reason for it, so maybe you don't need to worry about that key being closed by the case as long as it isn't damaging the keys or pads.
