 Daniel's - reeds of sound?
Author: Dave Lee Ennis

Since there was a question earlier on Glotin reeds, I was wondering if any of you have ever heard of a very cheap kind of reed called "Daniels". (This may be UK only) My friend Tom uses them and I have borrowed a few before. They take some time to warm up, but afterwards they are good for band practices, where your playing fortissimo all the time. Or am i just being flat wrong?

Daniel's reeds are available at at least one store in New York City, where I've bought some. The come in convenient 3 packs for about US$5.00, in addition to the usual box of 20 (about US$11.00). The 3 pack is good for testing them out.

I find them to be high quality, although the jury's still out in terms of comparison with Vandoren (my usual brand). The strengths are comparable to Vandoren. The salesman who sold them to me believes that they are more consistent than Vandoren, but I've only bought them in 3 packs. I think they're made in Italy from italian cane.

Now I think I'm going to buy a box of 20 to see if they are in fact more consistent!

I mispoke in my previous message - it's US$11.00 for a box of 10 reeds.

I agree with you on reed strength having tried them out. They do seem to be alot tougher to get into, but then at least your not worried about vandorens being too soft. By the way there was a spelling mistake on your first message. Can you spot it?

Now, in addition to the normal anxiety about reeds, you've made me neurotic about spelling! Should "italian" be capitalized? Should "the" be "they"? Should the question mark preceed the second quotation mark? Should Mark check our spelling and grammar before posting messages?

Maybe I should switch to the Modern Language Association website.
