I'm playing a Selmer Bundy alto clarinet (renting) and some of you offered good advice on reeds, mouthpieces tuning etc.
I thought I'd let you know how it's going. I ordered a Hite alto mouthpiece and have been using LaVoz soft alto sax reeds. I must be improving my lip and technique because the tuning problems that I had at first have gotten better. I took the instrument to band and played alto on a few songs last week; I had a lot of fun with it. The rental plan I'm on is a lease/purchase so if I keep the instrument long enough I may end up owning an alto--I think I may like that.

Well, Michael, it appears from what you report that you're doing all the right stuff. Your technique is getting better all the time and you're enjoying it. What could be better in the music world than that?
Let me be among those who are certain to wish you well in persuing your musical experience. It'll last a lifetime.

Glad to hear things are going well! I'm curious what you think of the Hite mouthpiece when it arrives. I use a Selmer mouthpiece on my alto (a Selmer) and was thinking of getting a Hite as a backup, since I like the Hite Premiere Bb mpc as a backup for soprano clarinet.

As much as I like David Hite, I didn't care for his alto clarinet mouthpiece. I use a Vandoren B44, tried a Selmer (can't remember which but it was one of the newer models with the numbers) and though it was almost as good. I also have played a Woodwind Co. #5 which I thought was good and reasonable. It may have been an older one and I don't know if the current ones are the same.
