 Stamitz duo concertos
Author: Kchui999

So our High School holds a senior soloist competition every year where one or more people have the opportunity to play a concerto with our orchestra in the spring. A bassoonist friend of mine suggested we look for a bassoon and clarinet concerto. We found a recording of a bassoon-clarinet concerto by Carl Stamitz, and thought it would be a good idea to work on that for the competition. Here's the link to the recording, for reference:

http://www.amazon.com/Stamitz-Clarinet-Concertos-Vol-1/dp/B0000014EA

I've been searching for days trying to find the piano reduction score and solo parts for this piece, but ive come up empty. Could anyone please tell me where i can find a copy of this piece, or if its in print at all?

Any other information about clarinet-bassoon concertos would be greatly appreciated. So far I've found Strauss' Duet-Concertino and one by Beethoven, but our selection has been limited.
Thanks for you help,

Chui

All three of the pieces you mentioned are listed by www.juneemerson.co.uk

I see you're based in the states, so may find them closer to home, but June Emerson is a great resource for anyone in the world in my opinion.

I'd be inclined to enter the Strauss for your competition, I can take or leave the Stamitz.

You have found a Beethoven concerto for clarinet and bassoon? Listed by June Emerson?

I think the world should be told! Surely this beats even GBK's theory that Mozart wrote a concerto for tenor sax.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Silly me, it's of course the op. 11 trio. I was scanning down the instrumentations and just caught clarinet, bassoon and piano.

I'll post back in a few days with my orchestration of the piano part.

I think you'll find the Beethoven Trio is for Cello and not bassoon. There are however the three duos for clarinet and bassoon Op Pos. The first two are C clarinet the last is Bb.

With regard to the Stamitz double concerto i have a vague memory of it being published by Musica Rara. I have performed it many years ago and i'm sure it was Musica Rara. My bassoon friend still has the solo parts with piano arrangment, i'll have to ask her.

Good luck with it, it is a nice concerto you should enjoy it. It works better with reduced strings as the bassoon can sometimes get lost in the texture.

The op. 11 Gassenhauer trio is indeed for 'cello rather than bassoon, I never said otherwise.

It is however published and recorded in many different combinations of violin, clarinet, cello, bassoon and probably others. It was this that I caught sight of as I was quickly scanning down the list...

Luyben Music:

<http:/www.luybenmusic.com>

lists the concerto (piano reduction) in the "Music for Clarinet and Winds" section of their catalog. If you call them, they would probably tell you who the publisher is. That might give you a starting point. Unfortunately, with a work this old, the publisher of the piano reduction might not be the publisher of the score and parts.

Best regards,
jnk

June Emerson lists the Stamitz as being published by Sikorski. She also lists two other classical concertanti for clarinet & bassoon - by Danzi (op.47) and Hoffmeister. Both are published by Kunzelman with piano reduction.
