 High School Audition Piece
Author: ElBlufer
Date:   2006-09-02 21:23

Our high school's audition piece this year is "Marche Militaire Francaise," which was composed by Camille Saint-Sdens. This piece is written in cut time, signifying it is a march, but does not have a tempo marking. Does anyone know what tempo this should be played in, or have any hints on any passages in the piece?

My Setup:
R13 Clarinet (Ridenour Lyrique as my backup/marching instrument)
Walter Grabner K11 mouthpiece
Rico Reserve 3.5's
Bonade ligature

The "March Militaire Francaise" is the 4th movement of Saint-Saëns' Suite Algèrienne.

It is marked in cut time, Allegro giocoso.

A tempo of about 120 is correct.

Watch the rapid tonguing unison passages with the other woodwinds.

Carefully observe all staccato and accent markings....GBK

Something else that will help you is a good recording. There is one available at no cost from the US Marine Band (President's Own) website in Mp3 format. Here's the link:

Good luck!

Thanks for the link...I guess I should have looked here before buying one off of itunes (bought one one hour ago). I'll check it out though, as it might have an arrangement closer to what I'm playing.

No trouble at all. I'm a pretty good resource for recordings. Anytime I have to play something in public, I've listened to at least one recording of it, usually several. This includes, GASP, marches!
