Eat a banana.

Seriously.

Eat a banana and have a small glass of milk about an hour before you must play.

I don't know why it works to calm my nerves, but it does.

When I tried eating a banana before I played, it did not work out so well. Even though it lowers your adrenaline there are some side effects that I experienced such as sweaty hands, and over salivating. Also when you drink milk it sticks to the back of your throat and can make your tone worse.

My suggestion for a good audition is to visualize yourself doing good and don't stress out about the things that normally give you trouble or about messing up. Also I find it's helpful not to practice the day of the audition until you warm up, since you will already be nervous and you might make a mistakes that you usually do not make. Then when audition time comes along you will be stressing about those mistakes and most likely make them again in the audition.

kev182,

For nervousness, avoid anything with caffeine (coffee, cola, tea) on the day of performance.
To relax, close your eyes and count backwards from 50 to 0 while breathing slowly and deeply.
And practise as much as you can till you can play it in your sleep.

Regards,
Hans

Know your material inside out - Izak Perlman said in an interview that he knew that he was ready to perform when he could play the music while watching television.

I suggest these things to my students - besides knowing your stuff backwards and forwards: Play your piece(s) in many different places besides your studio - in the kitchen, the rec room, in the back yard, on the street corner, at your relative's house, friends homes. It's spooky how awful you play outside your usual spot until you get accustomed to it!

The day of, play through everything SLOWLY (to be refresh your memory and to be accurate) and only once. Then go away. Make a list of what you need, extra reeds, music stand if necessary, your clarinet, your music, etc. Take a shower then dress in clean, comfortable, and appropriate clothing for the occasion. Clean and trim your finger nails, arrange your hair. (OK, but some students don't think about these things. There's little more distracting than watching someone trying to impress you when they're all dishevelled with dirty hands or nails.)

About an hour before playing eat a small snack of whatever that's like a Power Bar with protein for sustained energy and carbs for quick energy, along with something to drink. Make sure it's something that's always worked for you, not the time to try new foods. My teacher always uses bananas for reducing stress but that works for him. Others use other things. The best is just the confidence that comes with knowing your piece well. There are other hints mentioned on this BBoard - like running up and down the stairs and then playing, to imitate the breathlessness of playing while nervous. Check out everybody's suggestions and then see what works for you.

Bananna! wow, never heard of that but will definetly try it. Thanx for all the suggestions!

I know my piece well and am pretty confident about it, i guess thats what it all comes down to when you start playing
