 R13 bell - bore shape?
Author: Morrigan

Hi everyone
Well I know that Buffet's RC models have that little 'egg' in the bore of their bells, but my new R13 has it, just not as pronounced. I swear that was never there in the R13 I owned about 6 years ago, and it certainly isn't present in my Leblancs. The new Selmers to come out 'soon' also have it.
Is this new or did I just miss it the first time around?

(Disclaimer - I am maker of Forte' clarinet and TRAC (copyright & TM)
I have not seen the new R13 bells but the groove, chamber, TRAC, etc. have been around for a long while and used by Selmer on their "A" clarinet and Morrie Backun in his bells. We have found that it helps with tuning, intonation, and register shifts. I am not sure if others have investigated the physics thoroughly but after some year's work and prototyping we decided to include it with the Forte' C as the TRAC with the fancy name of Tuned Resonance Acoustic Chamber and to combine it with the passive bell vent for raising the flatness of the low notes and other attributes mentioned. The application of new physics derivitive formulas combined with the passive bell vent is the subject of a patent application.

I've looked at a couple recent R13s and there is no groove, chamber? So - does anyone else with a new R13 have this groove in the bell? What are the dimensions - width, depth?

It's only very slight and all three R13's I got to try had it - two with serial number 560xxx and one 54xxxx (I think). Quite subtle, not like the RCs. But definitely there when you feel it.

Come on guys/girls, somebody must have a recent R-13 on hand? It would be interesting to know if they incorporated this feature without even making marketing "hay" in the process? This would be a significant change in the old line R-13 configuration.

or it could just be that a Festival or RC bell got in the wrong pile and was stamped R13.....

The RC needs this feature, or the perceived need is met, the recent (2005)Festival that I have does not have it, but the R-13?

I have two newer R13s and neither have the groove. My new Tosca A clarinet DOES have it however.

My friend recently bouht a new R13 and the bell shape looked identical to my RC however the walls were much thicker on the R13. Because the R13 have polycilindrical bore all the way through and RC is conical from the lower joint.

I never understood what the egg shape was? i look at my bell all the time and try to see the egg.. i just see a normal bell :)

The groove, chamber, whatever you wish to call it is inside the bell pehaps 3/4 of the way up from the bottom or conversely 1/4 the distance below where the tenon cup ends and begins the flare of the rest of the bottom of the bell. It is perhaps 1-2 mm deep and 3 - 5 mm wide in some incarnations.

Maybe some of the Buffet dealers or Francois Kloc can comment on which new instruments have this feature?
