 Reed Knife?
Author: bill

I was looking into a new reed knife. When I was browsing the International Music Suppliers catalog, I came across a knife that might be good. It is the Vitry Double Hollow Ground knife ($18.75). Do you think this would be a good knife to get and is the price reasonable?

hi bill.

This isn't exactly answering your question, but on my reeds, I use a blade of good household scissors. the blade is perfect shape and I really like the control that the scissors' handles give me. They're nice and cheap as well!

Bill -

I've used a Vitry knife for many years. It takes an excellent edge and is easy to sharpen. As it happens, mine is flat on one side and hollow ground on the other, but I don't think it makes much difference.

What attracted me to it and has kept me using it is that the shape of the handle and blade fit my hand perfectly. This is a completely individual matter. I have large palms, so I need a large diameter handle with a longish bulb shape. My thumbs are fairly narrow, so I need a blade that is narrow from top to bottom.

Therefore, I wouldn't pick a knife out of a catalog, but would go where I could try a number of them, even if I had to pay a little more.

The $18.75 price is good -- less than most knives cost. You will have it forever, so the initial cost hardly matters.

Best regards.

I've used this model for years. Excellent knife for the money.
