Perhaps Selmer is giving them away due to nobody us buying them?!?
I tried a Signature and there was no comparison to an R13 - IMHO. Even againt a meter the R13 won hands down.

It depends on YOUR preference. Thank God that there are more car models to choose from than the Yugo or Opel Cadet! Some of us prefer the sound of Selmer, some of us prefer the sound of Buffet, or LeBlanc, or Yamaha, etc. I agree that it is just your opinion.
I own Selmer ( "N" Series, Balanced Tone, Centered Tone, and Series 9) as well as Buffet (R-13) and prefer the Selmer. I'm sure others on the BB that play LeBlanc or Yamaha, Patricola, etc. would also agree they have a legitimate claim that their clarinet preference works for them. I don't think that Selmer is going broke and having a marketing problem over their clarinet offerings.

BAC: I'm sure Selmer is trying to market its Signatures aggressively, especially given the dominance of Buffet in the U.S. and elsewhere.
Personally, I went through a long process of comparing the Signature with other comparable instruments, including the R13 (which is the instrument that I grew up with - mine was stolen). Much as I enjoyed the R13, I ended up switching to the Signature because of what I perceived as superior tone, intonation, and feel (tone hole placement)at the time. But I can appreciate your preference. It's a tough choice. By the way, I'm still happy with my choice.

I tried two Signitures at a Milwaulkee music store and found them to be exceptional in eveness of scale and intonation, particularily the low F, E and high F# & Eb. However, there was something about the quality of the sound that did not remain true from F to pp levels. It did not seem to remain focused nor did it project when I played it in a concert band. I much prefer my R-13s or my LeBlanc Concertos, but this is only humble opinion. It is good that we have so many fine choices, even within single manufacturers because we all have so many different playing characteristics and needs to deal with in choosing our axes. Try before you buy--good luck.

Geee, are we not a bit on the defensive side! Good grief, give it up, I stated for ME the R13 was MY choice.
I did go in however with the mind of buying a Signature - just had my heart set on it from what I read. After the judgement test (me) and the hardware test (the meter) - I made my choice.
This all sounds like the MAC vs PC wars!

You mean that when you wrote:

that you didn't mean it as a snide comment? I took it that way.

Ya perhaps Mark - I do admit I may have been influenced by the disappointment I felt after such a long search, and for that, my apologies.
I knew I wanted to move up to a pro model. I was playing on a 50 year old Master Model and so I had no loyalties to any brand. After all the reading on the Signature I was determined to get one. I traveled hundreds of miles to places that supposedly had them, only to find that they did not. Anytime I traveled on business, I looked for one. Of course all this just sparked my desire even more to have one. This went one for a long time. Finally I heard about the trial program and ordered one. Perhaps I just got a dud.
Again, my apologies for that and the analogies for the MAC Vs PC thing, we all know PC’s are better. ;-)

Apology accepted. This is the very reason that there's a bunch of us constantly harping on "don't take our word for it - try it yourself". I do know that there are places where this is patently impossible (some countries have few if any dealers); in that case I'd have someone who knows what they're doing select one for me.

Once again, Webmaster Mark brings civility and order to the Sneezy bulletin board. Have you ever thought of teaching kindergarten?
