Great service - Lisa Argiris Canning
Author: Morrigan
Date:   2006-08-24 05:48

Following some negativity surrounding Lisa lately, I just wanted to say that I recently asked Lisa to select some R13's for me and I gave her a fairly specific list of what I was looking for in my new instrument. She was very quick to respond to emails and the transaction all went smoothly, and the instruments I received were just awesome.
Don't believe the first thing you year - speak to the people who've purchased instruments from her! Many happy customers, myself included now!

I want to second that. As co-founder of International Clarinet Suppiers she did a wonderful job at the helm of the company. Things have not been the same since she left to esatblish her own business elswhere.

I just bought a beautiful R13 Bb clarinet from her. I'm very happy with it, and her price was quite reasonable and competitive. She was good to work with, and did good work.

Morigan, if by the negativity you refer to the thread Mark Charette posted, then it had nothing to do with her ability to select good clarinets. Personally after seeing that thread, which gave both sides of the story, I would prefer not to buy from such a person. I doubt she, or anyone else, has magical abilities to select clarinets better than someone else.
I am interested to know, how was your experience regarding ordering to overseas? I mean, from your post it sounds like you bought the clarinet for yourself, and asked her to send you several so you can try them and choose the one you want.
Also I'm interested to know, assuming you have stores in Australia with at least a reasonable selection (unless it is like here where we don't), at least bigger than the number of clarinets she shipped to you, why you chose this instead of trying the clarinets yourself in Australia? Unless my assumption is wrong.
Did you have to pay tax for all of them? If you did, will you get a refund for the tax on the ones you return? How does that work in Australia? Was the price total better than the price you would pay in Australia?

thanks.

I had the same experience with Lisa as Morrigan did. Friendly communication, expert selection of clarinets to my taste, good price, nice instruments. With the three clarinets I had to try out, every day it was a different clarinet that was the "best".

One might want to visit her website or call her if there are questions about how her selection process works and is unique from all others.

Lisa deals primarilly (although not exclusively) with Buffet instruments...and is quite successful at what she does.

She has many years experience helping my students and colleagues in the professional world - many of who's names might perhaps impress you!

I think that she has the ability to pick clarinets with clarity that have the characteristics the customer describes (especially if the customer has the reciprocal ability to describe with clarity what it is they are after). I've seen this work very well first hand.

Gregory Smith

PS. From time to time I have selected clarinets for those that contact me or Lisa so I am indirectly affiliated with her.

I have purchased two Eb, one C, two A, and two Bb clarinets from Lisa when she was with IMS. I have had nothing but excellent service from her. She gave me both, lots of personal attention, and great prices. She received her training from Robert Marcellus…She is a wonderful clarinetist and a dedicated musician. I am very happy to read such favorable reviews of her new business.

Best wishes to Lisa!

My A and Bb and my Bass were selected by Lisa. While with IMS, she only sent top quality instruments to me and my students.

Count me among Lisa's satified customers. The clarinets she selected for me to audition (seven bass & five C's--all Buffet) were "top notch" and I would not hesitate to call upon her again. She knows her business, professionally and finacially.

(and, she is nice)

clarnibass, there's more than Mark C's recent thread that I've heard negative things about her. You also have to look at who it is making the accusations and why. My teacher has ordred instruments for his students from her for many many years and they're all very good, one might even call them superior.
Yes, I certainly paid more than what I would here at a store in Australia, however, I would have had just as many to select from (ok so probably more) but here it's more about getting the duds out of the way so you can try the good ones, and even then there are still problems. This purchase ends more than 12 months of searching locally for an R13 (Or Prestige, or RC) that is better than my Leblanc Concerto.
All I paid was $33 quarantine fee. I was told by FedEx I'd have to pay GST (10% Goods and Services Tax) before they would deliver but this never eventuated. An error on their part I do not know.

At the end of the day, I now own an instrument which is superior to what I was using before. Makes a better sound, is more even, doesn't have as many problems. THAT is worth upgrading for at any cost!

Morrigan

Can you tell us how much was the clarinet excluding any other expenses?

That's something I'm not willing to disclose and is a question for Lisa. However, the price will have increased since Buffet's new pricing policy. I ordered before August.

Morrigan I completely understand you. I also bought almost all my clarinets in different countries because of the crappy ones we usually have here, from a selection of normally two, three if lucky (or I could special order with no refund option). I think a good plan is to buy your clarinet while on a trip somewhere doing also other things.
You sure got lucky with the taxes. I'd have to pay at least 15.5% for a clarient shipped from abroad, and up to 35% if unlucky.
