I've just become the proud parent....

... of a loverly brand new Buffet B12 Bb clarinet. I went today and had a play of both a new and second hand B12. Both were very nice to play, but the matt woodlike look of the new one won me over.

It was so nice to play a proper clarinet! The feel of it, and weight was just right for me, sounds nice with my pomerico sapphy mp too. The very nice chaps at the woodwind shop also took off the adjustable thumb rest, and swapped it over with the moulded plastic of the 2nd hand one. I found that *so* much more comfortable.

Cost for new was around $400 i think. £222, as they price matched a web price.

Now I guess I have to really learn to play it! I'm just itching to get it out, but its just a tad too late, not for me, but the neighbours!

Thank you for all the recommendations, they were greatfully recieved!

It's never too late to practice - I've just been doing some harp, alto flute and piccolo practice as there's nothing on telly - and I live in a terraced house.

But £222 is a good price for a B12 - they retailed at £279 around 20 years ago!

Sadly i live upstairs in a block of flats. I used to play flute/pic/whistle till quite early in the morning, until my old, deaf, neighbour moved out. The new neighbours have young kids, and my practice cum comp cum junk room is right above the bedrooms.

Seriously about the price? They're a very good shop. We picked up a flute fresh from service and they took a look and tweaked another flute, plus checked mine out, which im pleased to know that it doesn't need a service. It can really pay to buy from a shop sometimes. We always go there as a first call.

You know you're dealing with human beings when buying from a shop - that human element makes it all worthwhile, plus the fact they can deal with any problem there and then - you'd never have been able to get a plastic thumbrest fitted by mail order!

You definitely got a good deal there! £222 is an excellent price, and what with the amount of inflation since 1986 (when they were £279) you've paid a good price.

Truly you must be the neighbour from hell!

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

A bit of culture inflicted on the masses isn't a bad thing. I have to put up with them blasting out Fleetwood Mac or James Blunt in the small hours, so they can put with me.
