I just purchased a Borbeck 13 mouthpiece to be played on my R13. Any suggestions on reed matches? Tried v12 3.5 (suggested by Mr. Borbeck) and Glotin Gaia 3.0. I use a BG ligature.
Thanks!

I play a Borbeck 12 with VD 3 1/2 & 4 ... both Traditional and V-12 ... I would have said 4 .. but the humidity is killing me recently (high). I use a BG lig as well. I recently tried the VD Optimum and this works very well too. The Optimum is (so far for me) the easiest ligature to put on/take off I have ever seen. I have also used a Luyben which works well and a Bonade inverted. SO I think that MANY ligatures can co-exist with Mr Borbeck's mouthpieces. Robert is a pleasure to work with.

I've been playing either Borbeck 13's or an old Cicero Kaspar 13 for many years. They're quite similar, but my latest mpc from Borbeck was even better than the previous Borbeck. My setup was the Bonade standard ligature until I discovered the Peter Spriggs ligature which is phenomenal, to put it mildly. As for reeds, I've a few old Morre 2.5 strength reeds, which seem to still outshine any V12, Zonda, etc. or Black Masters I've used over the years. Now, of course, Morree reeds are nearly impossible to find, and are not manufactured any longer, as you no doubt are aware. But, they're the best, especially (for me) those in the 12.6 width. I'd suggest you try lots of reeds. I imagine you'll nearly always come back to V12's, as have I. I believe the 3.5 strength is probably the most practical. Lots of success with your new Borbeck. Sincerely, E.Thomas

As an adult novice, I personally use Vandoren V-12 2.5 or tailored 3.0 reeds. I don't have the embouchure and air support strength to push a stiffer reed with my Borbeck 13 pro grade mp. I use a standard metal lig with it. I've found that any reed/lig combination that I'd use on a Vandoren B45 mp will work great with the Borbeck 13 mp. Metal ligs work great, but I believe that cloth ligs may not work too well on the Borbeck mp.
I have to agree with the postings above. Both the product and the person are great to work with. I'd buy another Borbeck pro grade mp in a heartbeat.
