Hello! I'm new to this message board and looking for some suggestions. I played clarinet from 4th grade thru college. I was pretty serious about it through high school and really enjoyed playing. I loved most of my band teachers and learned a lot from them. I never took lessons outside of school as my parents weren't able to afford them. Anyway, I didn't have much time for it when I attended college. I played in marching band for 2 years and pep band for 4 years. I stopped playing for a year or so and then joined a community band. I played only once a week or so for about 3 years. It's been 3 years since I've touched a clarinet and I miss it terribly. I gave away both of my instruments a few years ago. Anyway, I'll probably purchase an instrument sometime in the next month or two so I can resume playing. I'm relatively new to Las Vegas and I'm looking for a teacher. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello, and Welcome to the BBoard!!!
Not sure about who teaches in LA, but there are several places you could look.
Faculty at area universities with strong music departments. These might be a bit pricey, but you will DEFINITELY get what you pay for. There may even be some good students looking to make some money - easier on your wallet, but the quality of instruction may not be as good as with a professional teacher.
You could ask around at the local public schools. Most Music Teachers seem to know several qualified teachers in the area, and they may be able to put you in touch with a few of them.
You might also look around for a local community band/orchestra. These can be a lot of fun, and they are usually always looking for new members, regardless of playing level. These groups are often full of people who just enjoy playing, and you could make some really good friends!!!
Best of Luck!!!

Tammy,
You might try calling the local musicians union; ask for Mr. Bill Klinger (I think he's the vce-president). Bill is a Juilliard grad (studied with Bonade), a fine clarinetist, and retired clarinet professor from the University of Miami. If he's no longer giving lessons I'm sure he can refer you to one of their members who would be happy to have you as a student!
