Evette Master Model in Pawn Shop

I am 14 yrs. old and looking foor a step up from my Buffet B12. I was looking at an E11 but I also liked the R13. However I didn't want to spend $500 or $1500 (respectively) even if it was a good deal. I stopped by a pawn shop just for kicks to look at the crappy Chinese ones they would have, and to my surprise I see an Evette Master Model in a leather case, made in Paris, etc. etc. (The SN, I think was K8044). I had just tried out the R13 at a music store and I noticed that the side keys were very similar. All it seems to need is a good overhaul. I thought, "The manager of this store must be crazy!!" Is he? I guess my bottomline question would be: Is this a good quality intermediate/ professional clarinet?- especially for $50 (plus overhaul of course)

Having purchased clarinets from pawn shops in the past with good results I am not biased against them. Not knowing anything else about the MM you cite I myself would buy it in a flash without hesitation. Understand, however, I'm not suggesting you should do that. I had the opportunity to work on and play a MM with a 7xxx serial number last year and was very impressed. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. How much do you think the overhaul would be on it?

A good overhaul in my area would run $250 - $300. An inexpensive repad would run $150.

a student of mine reccently bought one of these that had just been overhauled. I taught her this afternoon- she has a lovely sound, incredibly mature for a 12 year old- even using a Hite premiere plastic mouthpiece!
i play tested the instrument before she bought it, and have played it once or twice during lessons, and can say that it has a lovely tone- and there are aspects of the intonation that i'm jealous of (owning a "tweaked" R13 myself). This doesn't mean that EVERY master model is as good as this one, but for $50 i'd buy it and get it overhauled if it were my money.

Hi,

There are several threads on the master model on this BB. The Evette as well as the Buffet models have some differenecs through the production cycle.

I have owned several Buffet Master Models; they have always been very nice but prone to the wide 12th that seems to plague most R13s I have owned. I have sold all of them for from $375 to $450; each was in top playing shape and had a nice mouthpiece.

Figure $200 for an overhaul, if any springs or keys need tweaking.

A decent clarinet for $250 is reasonably priced.

The catch (there's always a catch) is that if the instrument needs cracks repaired, or tonehole work - the cost will may outweigh the value of the instrument.

Rather than spend so much on a possibly good instrument, consider a modern alternative. The Hard Rubber TR147 or current Arioso models from Tom Ridenour are gems. You should be able to get one of those for the same money...
