 Buffet E11 bought from Amazon

I just had one of my very advanced beginners come to lesson with a new Buffet E11 which her parents bought from Amazon.com

After carefully checking it over and expecting to find all sort of adjustment issues, to my surprise the clarinet was absolutely perfect in every way.

All keywork was tight, with no lost motion and was perfectly adjusted. Pad heights were set correctly and there were NO stuffy notes. Even in today's very humid weather, the clarinet assembled freely and disassembled easily.

Perhaps this was purely the luck of the draw and she happened to get a VERY good one, but this particular clarinet was a gem.

BTW - Her parents paid a very reasonable $707 for it...GBK

I've purchased more than I care to admit via Amazon and have never had a bad experience. Of course, their offerings are from everywhere and everyone....however, there are safeguards built into their system that I trust. That price for a new E11 is really a good deal.

GBK - I frequently find little to complain about in E-11s. The toneholes are very well finished. I attribute this to the fine workmanship at Schreiber, where these instruments are made.

The day may come though when Buffet moves production of the E-11 - I have some trepidation about that.

This was the first new E11 that a student has brought to lessons in about a year.

Prior E11's that I've seen seemed to always have a few minor set up issues (lost motion in keys, pad heights, binding joints, etc...) . They were certainly fixable, but attention was needed to put the horn in optimum playing condition.

If this particular new E11 is representative of the current run of E11 clarinets, I am impressed ...GBK

Amazon is largely distribution, that clarinet...

"Ships from and sold by Woodwind and Brasswind."

Perhaps WWandBW is making sure only the best go through Amazon, the E11 really is improved, or WWandBW general inspection and woodwind techs are improving.

... or it was luck :)

Actually, the Amazon web site shows that you have a choice of having the clarinet shipped from either WW/BW (Music 123) , Giardinelli or Musician's Friend.

All sell it for the same price - $707 ...GBK

Ah! Very interesting, I stand corrected. I guess only certain product lines do that, like clarinets.

Flute and oboe Amazon listings don't seem to have gotten quite there yet.

It is fortunate that your student got a good horn and that he or she has a true clarinet teacher/pro player who can check it.
What is a shame is when a mediocre or worse horn winds up in the hands of someone who's instructor is less than stellar.
