 Mouthpiece with YCL-34
Author: saxologist

Just bought a YCL-34 Yamaha Bflat for my daughter. The Mouthpiece looks like the original with this horn. Does anyone know whay MP this is, there are not marking other than Yamaha on it.

Probably the Yamaha 4C. That was standard with the YCL-34. I'd upgrade if possible to a Vandoren 5RV or B45 and get a Rovner ligature--the usual suggestion of most band directors. Or, you might contact Walter Grabner (a sponsor of this board) and ask him about one of his new intermediate mouthpieces.

There is a good chance that it is a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece. It usually came as standard issue with Yamaha clarinets.

It is an adequate student mouthpiece...GBK

you guys are right on, found the 4C on the bottom side of the MP. I appreciate the quick response.

My daughter now playing the YCL-34 from the 250 (plastic). What a tonal difference...richer darker sound. I am glad we bought a wood horn.

Noticed small chip at tenon joint not undermining the cork. (It seals well and is secure with the barrel). Can this be repaired on wood clarinet. It is almost un-noticable but concerned.

I personally wouldn't be concerned about it. When she's ready to feel the effect of that chip, she probably won't be playing a YCL-34.

i played a yamaha ycl-34 in middle school, and at the time, played it with a vandoren 5rv lire, which did work well with the instrument and where i was as a player. i would not recommend keeping the stock mouthpiece that came with it, as i recall, mine was quite bad.

"i would not recommend keeping the stock mouthpiece "

Not all 4C mps are bad.

If I'm correctly remembering a conversation I had with a mouthpiece maker a few years ago not all Yamaha 4C mouthpieces are the same. The older ones (probably about 10 years old by now) were not the greatest, better in my opinion than the stock Buffet but not wonderful. The more recent ones are significantly nicer.

The original ones were a very soft plastic, I have one that has a beautiful groove in it demonstrating the progress of the orthodontic work I was having. Believe me I wasn't biting down on the mouthpiece, the orthodontist cured me of that!
