 Calrinet from France
Author: clarinet@55

I have a B flat clarinet that I plyed in grade & high school & was wondering if anyone can give me any information on it. This is all I know about it. It was made by Robert Malerne & CIE of Paris France.
It is no longer playable as the wood has developed a severe air leak in the casing of the main body.
What I'm looking for in information is : date of manufacture, quality of the instrument, price , etc. Also, any way that I can repair it?
Thank you,
D.Polson

Do a search - already there's 282 posts on the Malerne company/clarinets.

Our BBoard expert on Malerne instruments is David Spiegelthal. He will prob. respond when he spots this thread. GBK, can you correct the spelling and put Malerne in the title to help, please. In the meantime, clarinet@[?]55, if you make a Search [see above] you may turn up the info you wish to find. Malerne was a good [minor] French maker until, I believe, the 1960's. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks, Don, but I'm hardly an expert. As Mark suggests, a search here on the BB will be fruitful. In a nutshell, Malerne was sort of the French equivalent of Kohlert --- a company that made many woodwind instruments over a relatively long period, sometimes under their own name but just as often as 'stencil' instruments for other brands. I've counted at least a dozen brands engraved into Malerne-made alto and bass clarinets, for example. I have a 'simplified Conservatory'-system Malerne oboe which is a pretty decent instrument, and their saxes have a pretty good reputation (check the SaxOnTheWeb forum as well).
