I'm again attempting to research any clarinetists visible or audible in western music incl. western swing, western movies, or elsewhere in the cowboy genre. Of particular interest are instances of clarinet solos on record or the appearence of the instrument onscreen.
Current stuff I'm tracking:
Woody Wood (Texas Playboys) - formerly with Red Nichols. Nice clarinet solo w/the Playboys on "Home in San Antone"
Darol Rice (Republic Rhythm Riders/Roy Rogers Riders) - looking for flicks in which he appears...most like with Roy Rogers and or Rex Allen. Is supposed to appear in "Out California Way" with Monte Hale, but I have yet to identify him. Recorded with Foy Willing and the Riders of the Purple Sage, but does not appear to have been a regular band member. Also possibly the bass clarinetist on Ernie Ford's recording of "Sixteen Tons"
Neely Plumb (Foy Willing & Riders of the Purple Sage) - again probably not a regular band member, but most likely sitting for recordings only. Better known as a record producer and father of actress Eve Plumb.
Maury Stein (Foy Willing & Riders of the Purple Sage) - again, probably a recording relationship only.
Tex Atchison (Foy Willing & Riders of the Purple Sage) - probably involved with this band as a fiddler, although he had early experience as a reedman.
Can anybody add some names or illuminate any of these?
