Artie seems to have had a rather modest estate, considering his many million-seller recordings and his books. And he claimed the divorces didn't cost him anything because his wives had more money than he did, so that was not the reason.
Apparently there is a new (to me, at least) biography. I was wondering if anyone had read it and if it contained anything of interest......

I have always liked his clarinet playing style and his taste in women. It probably wouldnt matter to him who ended up with his money.
If I was to believe what was written about him I would have to think he had an attitude or was difficult at best. But that was the style in those days.
A very interesting article. There was another one more about Artie posted not to long ago on the BB.

In adjusted dollars it's probably closer to $20M with over 60 years of music-related residuals, publishing profit, investments and whatever else he had his fingers in. I can relate to the ex-wife suing; I just went through a lollapalooza of an estate/last will battle with family members of a dead relative. And even with everything laser-beamed in granite there were still lawsuits, threats of lawsuits and bitter angst; pity, I was shocked at some of my relatives' ravenous, bloodlust behavior when they didn't get every penny they felt their birthright entitled them to. People can definitley get weird when money is involved.
Good lesson; my clarinets at least are going to my high school and I have it set up that a school administrator will come and collect them in person from my executor. My school deserves them; if it wasn't for my high school band director I'd be painting curbs at the Y. v/r Ken

I've seen the same thing happen with my saintly mother-in-law, a woman so concerned with others that she would have had a smooth road into heaven (assuming that such a place exists in the first place). Never a cross word with anyone, universally loved by all, etc.
Then her father (who had remarried after the apparent death by suicide of my mother-in-law's mother) up and died. leaving all his worldly possessions to the second wife. (She was a woman from (Oh horror!) that sink of iniquity, Chicago (a real problem in the eyes of southern Illinoisians).)
At that point, Geneva became a combination of wonderful woman (to almost all) and vindictive witch (to the members of the second wife's family). Although there was money at stake, far more important to my mother-in-law were the personal possessions of the man, which the second wife's family mostly just threw in the trash (as the decedent was very old).
All in all, it materially contributed to her death a few years later. She never was the same after it all.

I wonder if the Executor is payed per hour. If he loses the appeal, the estate loses, but he gains. Someone I know ran into this trying to buy a boat slip from baseball player Norm Cash's estate.

A quick Google only revealed that the BG Estate is a continuing financial entity overseeing everything BG. Despite the possible truth of Artie's jab about BG's intelligence he was smart enough to have his financial affairs managed by his wife's brother....who was smart. Whatever Artie left I'll bet BG left at least ten times as much....

In his will, Benny Goodman gave to Yale all of his big band arrangements (more than 1500) and 400 ten inch master tapes of unreleased studio and concert recordings.
For all big band and Benny Goodman scholars, below is the link to the complete holdings of the Benny Goodman collection which is at the Music Library at Yale University.
It is interesting to look at the details of all the arrangements of the tunes played by Goodman and his band(s).
The original instrumentation, year written, key, arranger, and any miscellaneous information (missing parts, photocopies, penciled revisions, etc...) is listed for each tune in Benny's book. It is amazing how many charts (some in multiple versions/keys) his band had.
Who would have known, that in their books, Benny's band carried around arrangements of Stars and Stripes Forever, Spinning Wheel, or Sunshine of My Life?
