I need some advice!!! Got my wisdom teeth out!!
Author: ClarinetGirl127

Hello there. I just got 2 of my wisdom teeth taken out this morning and my dentist said I should probably take off 2 weeks from playing my clarinet. But the problem is I have an audition next Saturday for college marching band and it's the last chance to audition. The extraction was very simple and very smooth. No cutting involved and wasn't given anything but novacane (sp?) And there is not alot of pain and swelling. Plus I was planning to be extra careful for a week. But I don't want to get 'dry sockets'. Will I be fine for my audition and do you have any tips to prevent any complications?

I had the same thing - but just one pulled (the rest came out in an operation 6 months later). In my case, it all healed up quite quickly and I was playing again within a week. I think that audition might be off your list. Tough break - maybe you should aim to do a really good audition next year or for whatever else might be coming up? I used my downtime to plan for things like this.

1127, Explain your situation to the Marching Band Director. Ask if he/she could accept your high school band director's recommendation, until you are able to play your audition.

My tip? Follow the doctor's advice - he/she is the only one qualified to tell you when things are ready to start again. If they said "2 weeks" - listen to them.

You'll have to explain to whereever you're auditioning that you need to re-schedule. There's no alternative.

When I had 2 wisdom teeth removed I couldn't play for about 3 weeks if I remember correct, but mine were removed before they started to grow from inside the gums. Sounds like your situation was easier and 2 weeks makes sense, so I would follow this advice.
If near the audition you feel you can play then maybe try to see your doctor so he can check and see if it is really ok. I would probably just go with how I feel, but that's just me.

For what it's worth: my stepdaughter, a clarinet performance major, had her wisdom teeth out a week and a day ago. Her doctor's advice was to take a week off.
Yesterday it had been a week and she had a followup appointment in the afternoon. She tried playing a little in the morning and actually experienced some
pain. At her appointment later in the day the doctor said everything looked good and she can practice to her heart's content - if she can stand the pain.

My feeling is that few of these doctors have much of a clue about the physiology
of clarinet playing - the pressures put on different parts of the mouth by the muscles of the embouchure, the resistance of the airflow, etc. That's too bad, but
if you don't follow YOUR doctor's advice and something goes awry in your recovery, it would not be a good situation.

Rinse your mouth with salt water - after breakfast in the morning, afternoon and just before sleeping at night. Can't say whether this will help make the date or not, but a mild saline solution is an amazing antibiotic and healer. At least the healing will take place a little faster.

Isn't pain an indication that something isn't healed yet? Seems that if there's pain, the gums are telling us that they're not ready yet.

please!! wait the two weeks! this is your MOUTH! You don't want to rip the stitches and re-open the wounds. The pressure from playing clarinet can do that, even after a week. I'm sure the director of the marching band would understand your predicament and give you a new audition date after the 2 weeks are over.

My god... this should have been thought of before! Wait the two weeks, I just got mine out and even though it went smoothly I didn't even touch a horn for two weeks.

Ask your doctor... not us.

This is marching band. What difference does it actually make whether you are on the 30 yard line or the 35 yard line? You can't hear individuals and nobody can tell the difference in the stands anyway. Relax, heal properly per the doc's instructions, let the chips fall where they may, and enjoy the season.

Hey, I did ask my denist. And he said I could try after a week but it would better to wait 2 weeks. Oh and I have no stitches. And plus I see tons of people asking about playing their instruments after teeth extractions on forums. So I guess I can have everyone's opinions if I want them. Oh and sorry about that sounding um... rude maybe.

If he says you can try after a week, then try. Try to talk to the director or send an email or something to let him know what's up.

It honestly takes awhile. talk to the band director, and ask for an extension. Still go to the meetings with the marching band and be there to show your dedication. When it all comes down to it, it shows that you really want to be part of something, rather than waiting a year and mulling over your unfortunate tooth surgery. It's a weird feeling at first, but you'll get over it. Kinda like braces, annoying at first, but easily adaptable.
