Smallman Three Pieces for Eb soprano and clarinet choir

Our clarinet choir just played our last summer concert. Included in the program was a new piece that some of you may be interested in.

Jeff Smallman, a composer from Brantford Ontario, began by writing just the one piece, THE SEARCH. According to the story that met our ears, he wrote this for a movie. Later he added the other two movements called THE SIGHTING and THE ENCOUNTER. These pieces feature the Eb soprano clarinet with full accompaniment. Because we're an ensemble of 10 and doubled most parts, we were tempted to play one of the bass clarinet parts with contra bass, but resisted the temptation.

We loved this suite from the beginning - The Search is very humourous, almost cartoonlike in the use of the playful clarinet sound. The Sighting is slow and reflective, with an Eb soprano solo - the Eb player can really express himself here. It also includes 16th note runs in the lower voices that call for restraint so they don't run away (lots of work with the metronome), but rather remain as a quiet murmer underneath the Eb clarinet. The Encounter returns to a jaunty lightness.

We'd invited Jeff to attend our concert but he's not living close by anymore and was unable to be here. We'd love to play this suite for him one day when he's in town. Jeff?

One of our ensemble members found these in a music store in Ontario. But Eighth Note Publications has them, a Google search will bring up their website. They sell each section individually for $15. The first piece is rated Easy/Medium difficulty, but the other two are rated at Med/Difficult. The second clarinet part for The Encounter has two measures of pretty stubborn awkwardness, but I can't speak for the Eb part.
