 Buffet model identification???
Author: Itsme
Date:   2006-07-26 02:37

Hello. Can anyone share any thoughts on how to identify what model a particular Buffet clarinet is. It seems as though there often is no model number on the instrument, just a serial number. (I realize that the serial number can be used to identify a date of manufacture.) Any insights would be appreciated.

I think it's only the R13 that doesn't have the model name stamped on it - all the student Buffets (German and French) have the model name on the top joint, as do the RC and the models above that.

If it's a fairly recent Buffet the model name is stamped on the back of the barrel and bell as well.

Okay, thank you very much for the information, Chris. Are all of the professional models made in France? Also, I never saw a student model that was made in France, only Germany.

You haven't seen much!

Until about 1976 ALL Buffet clarinets have been made in France. Not necessarily in the same factory but in France.

Also, the E13 is made in France, but is a student (or "intermediate") rather than professional model. I'd guess that's what Chris was referring to, rather than what happened 30+ years ago.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.

Thanks for the info. everyone. Is it really safe to assume that a Buffet that has no model number is an R13? If not, then how do you really know?

Okay, so if it has no model number it may or may not be an R13. Any clues as how to do any further identification (besides the serial no.)?

Will / can Buffet help someone to identify a clarinet from the serial number?

Please describe the logo exactly as it appears on the clarinet and post the serial number. Otherwise it's a guessing game.

I'm having a similar problem ID'ing a buffet clarinet. I found and used the serial # search on the Buffet website (http://www.buffet-crampon.com/en/instruments.php) and it says it is a BC 1131.NI. Would it be correct to interpret that as R13-Nickel plated?

The serial number is:
395286

The first thing you want to do identifying the R13 is to make sure that there's the marking "MADE IN FRANCE" just bellow the logo (BC), and nothing else.

If that's the case your clarinet is an R13 made in 1994

The serial number is supposed to have a 13 in it if it is an R13.

Ken, where did you hear that? I've had lot's of R13's that contradict that theory, and currently play a 1966 vintage without a 13 in it's serial number.

"The serial number is supposed to have a 13 in it if it is an R13."

yeah.... i'd double check your source. first of all, you would limit the number of clarinets that you could produce if the serial number had to include a 13 in it, or the serial number would be incredibly longer.
