 Piece for Clarinet & bass
Author: Ted

Heard this piece on a local radio station called "Vinny's Gig" by Morton Gould for clarinet and string bass. Nice jazz influenced piece , played well. Does anyone know who the players might be as the announcer didn't announce it?
BTW - I usually don't like "classical" (hate to use that term) music that uses jazz idioms as it rarely sounds right. But this piece had the spirit of improvised music , and it had a relaxed natural sound.

Ted,

The piece u are referring to is actually called "Benny's Gig" a worked composed for Benny Goodman. As there are several recordings of the work available, it is impossile to say who the performers are.

According to Van Cott (woodwind.org sponspor), the Larry Combs recording of "Benny's Gig" is recommended.

Having heard that and no other recording, it sounds pretty good.

Can anyone point me to a recording by someone other than Larry Combs? His is the only one I've ever come across (vinyl or CD).

Best regards,
jnk

Interesting, could the string bass part be played on bass clarinet ? Any thots on degree of difficulty, number of "movements", playable by semi-skilled cl'ists ?? If there are more yesses than no's, where could parts be found. TKS, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks for the info. I don't remember if they mispronounced it or my car radio was fuzzy or my ears were challanged. It probably could be done with clar. & bass clar. as a duo. Nice piece.
