i got a friend,fiona,received a Bb clarinet from her uncle last month.the clarinet brand is SILVERTONE, and she seems so happy when she get it.however when she practised using that clarinet,she found out that the clarinet is very resistant.i have got a chance to try on it,and something really stunned me is the thickness of the body n bell of this clarinet.the thickness of this clarinet is the double thickness of the normal 1,and need a lot of air support to play.besides that,it is extremely hard when u play tonguing.
may i know that anyone here had heard this brand before?and does the thickness of the wood affect playing n the color tone produced?any way to make the clarinet less resistant?

Hi Nicole - Silvertone [no S] was the name of the clarinet sold by Sears-Roebuck quite a few years ago, it was likely made by Bettoney, Pedler, Pruefer or other US cl manufacturer. Is yours really wood, or "plastic" [prob. hard-rubber], many of the S's were metal in my recollection. As to resistance, are the pads quite old, stained, or "fuzzy" [as a broken-skin pad might look] ? A "leaky" horn would be very hard to play even if actually playable. well,fiona said that she changed all the keypad of the clarinet already.so i think the condition of that clarinet should be ok.

That is good, lets hope that the new pads all "seat well". My next thought concerns the mouthpiece, are there any names, numbers, letters on it ? Are there scars on the "lay" or "table", the flat area where the reed is attached, also are there numbers of the back of the reed? I'm assuming that you are quite new "to this game, please correct us if I'm wrong. Don

well,i am actually calling myself a newbie.she examined the mouthpiece and she said that is made of plastic,with no scar,n the opening of the mouthpiece seems abit wider than the normal 1.she is using vandoren reed 3.5...
