 Buffet Clarinet Identification Help
Author: rdegraw

I have a Buffet Bb clarinet that I bought second hand in HS, but didn't find out what model it was. I am trying to determine what it is, but have had no luck at my local music stores (I don't live in a very big town). I've been online and done a lot of research that indicates that it may be an R13, but then I read that Buffet didn't start making the R13 until 1955, and I believe this clarinet was made in the late 1940's (serial # 31624). There is no identification on the clairnet (beyond a Buffet Crampon stamp on each piece) and the serial number is stamped on the upper joint. Can anyone offer any advice? Thank you.

There should also be a matching serial number on the lower portion of the bottom joint ...GBK

You are right - I just never noticed it before because it is at the bottom of the lower joint and for some reason I kept looking around the thumb rest. After doing more searching on this site (you've apparently got to try a BUNCH of different search terms to find info!) it looks like it could be an R13, just not the type made from 1955 on. The stamp on each of the parts reads Buffet Crampon & cie

Your Buffet clarinet was manufactured in either late 1946 or early 1947 and most likely has the "pre-R13" type bore ...GBK

OK...now I've got one more question. Based on other postings on this site, it looks like the "pre R13" type clarinets could be professional models or student model (which seem to be professional models that had some sort of defect during the manufacture). If my clarinet is NOT stamped with "Academie" can I assume that it is a professional model?

No, that's not true. Your clarinet is the top professional model. In the US this particular clarinet was sold as an R-13. It has cylindrical bore. Buffet denies existence of an R-13 before 1955. IMO it doesn't matter how you call it 'Pre-R13', an 'R13' etc. The fact is; these clarinets have CYLINDRICAL bore and Robert Carree's R-13s have POLYCYLINDRICAL bore.
