I would consult your orthodontist. Just tell him you play the clarinet and are hungry :) and want to know when everything will return to normal.Best of Luck!!!Clayton

Is that the same as braces? Or do they at least have the same effect on the well-being of the victim?
If yes, call again in a week - either the pain has eased up or the grumble in your stomach drowns the squeaks of the tooth nerves.
I've been in jawmonger's treatment for several years and know what I'm talking about - I'm crossing my fingers anyway.

thanks to all....its been about 8 days....and i still can't play as well.....my orthodontist says that it should go down.... i can eat a little bit now... but not as much as i would like to! hehehe! i am worried because i start marching band in 5 days as 1st clarinet.... scraed to see how that goes.....
and no, an expander is not the same thing as braces, it is an appliance attached to the roof of your mouth that you have to turn to expand your jaw. thank you to everyone who replyed.....if anyone else has other advce, i would appreciate it a lot!

Hi,

ur front two teeth hurt because the palate expander has actually moved those teeth slightly, and will continue to do so until you have a large gap in between your front teeth. I had the very same appliance when i was about 12 yrs old. The appliance spreads the teeth out, thus making room for the braces to straighten the teeth, without overcrowding.

I wonder how this appliance effected my clarinet playing in the long run. Perhaps my enlarged palate is the secret to my "dark tone"

asheekad,

generally, biting down on the mouthpiece is a bad idea, i would consult your teacher.

The ache will start to fade and you will be able to play without hurting your teeth (even if you want to bite!). Everytime you get a new brace or adjustment your teeth will hurt like h***. I can still remember the pain! It's something you just have to accept. When I was having treatment I was a flute player and always had to take a few days off because even cleaning my teeth hurt, let alone doing anything else with my mouth while the teeth settled again. For your next appointment try and arrange the date so you have two weeks afterward before you need to be performing. Gives you a few days to get back in shape each time. Orthadontic treatment hurts. Anyone who tells you otherwise has no nerves in their mouth! Also, if you are given any type of retainer (don't know what they use where you are but we have clear plastic retainers) at the end of your treatment, then wear it for at least as long as your orthadontist recommends. The last thing you want is for the teeth to move back!

Reading this makes me appreciate the fact that I have never had nor probably ever will need braces or any sort of mouth-related operation. A lot.

Good luck!
