Audacity is free as it is opensource. There is still, I believe, and active development community.

I've used audacity before and it is a great program, with many cool features, that will come in handy. Although it has it's minor quirks and glitches, there is a very useful function called change tempo, where you can increase/decrease the tempo of your recording X amount, to see if your passage is really even. Definitely recommended
