the wood in the upper joint is starting to show alot more on my vintage clarinet, and i was wondering what kind of stain should i use to maintain the color? is it worth staining? and lastly, is it effective?

Many clarinetists prefer being able to see the wood grain, and some try to remove the stain.
If you think that oil, or wax, may darken the wood enough to satisfy you, then check out Dr.'s Products under Accessories at the right side of page. It would be a lot easier to oil or wax it, than to stain it.
Obviously, clarinet manufacturers think clarinets are worth staining, but my prsonal preference is to let the wood show.
Some of the most expensive clarinets aren't stained.

For starters, try rubbing in a few drops of bore oil and see what happens. Maybe the exterior of your clarinet is just dried out.

oh yeah i've done that, but there is uneveness in my upper joint per say the lower joint. should i just use acetone and even out the lower joint to match the wood color of the upper?

I'd leave it as it is if it was one of mine - why mask the natural beauty of wood? This is the thing with wood, it's a natural substance and naturally variable.
Live with it - it won't affect the tone or playability.

I've only just finished getting my Navy shoes back to a mirror finish for next week (after getting them all scuffed at the festival last week) and don't want to think about doing that again for a while!
Yeah, the old 'spit 'n' polish' thing - if they had toecaps I'd paint them with black enamel!

Shoe polish on the wood of the clarinet? I suppose you have to follow up with using a shoe string ligature?

i've seen some cases where the condition of the clarinet is pretty much in a shoe case =)
my options are:
leave it alone!
use black ebony acryllic (tempted to use this, but i'll see how it comes out in the sunlight put like a small spot on the connecting pieces)
black shoe stain I have some of that, but i don't have a polishing machine.

I have a really old clarinet that was such in poor condition. The stain looked like it almost disapeared completely from some parts. I oiled it (with olive oil) and it got very dark again. I wouldn't bother with anything else, and go with the option you suggest of leaving it alone.

Try ferric chloride solution.
This makes wood dark almost naturally.
